We found her by the side of the road,
amongst the brambles and the sun faded litter.
It was late in the day and the sun was already going down.
We looked all around but her mommy and daddy were nowhere to be found
so Mommy scooped her up and brought her home.
Mommy gave her the room with the transparent walls
a clean bed and plenty of food to eat.
Day after day I watched our guests' silent existence
evolve into the rhythm of eating and sleeping.
This continued till the fourth day of her stay
when my two year old eyes saw something strange.
"Oh no!!" .......Look Mommy look!"
my fingers pointed and touched the glass.
There was our guest with her
back to the door
curled in the fetal position
food untouched.
"Don't worry," said Mommy,
"Seen it before, she just needs some time, that's all"
Day after day, I watched and waited
wondering what was going on with our strange little guest.
Till one morning, about a fortnight into her stay
a surprise like no other
greeted my eyes.
Vibrant streaks of orange, black and yellow
swirled and filled the entire room.
The pajamas she had worn for the past two weeks
were discarded in a crumpled heap on the floor.
With concern on her face,
Mommy quickly opened the door
and took her by the hand.
"This will not do, you need more space," she said.
So hand in hand they headed out the door
and the trio sat on the front step.
After several minutes of stretching and flapping
her delicate,new appendages,
our silent guest released mommy's hand
and fluttered to the top of the apple tree.
Is this the end of the story?
Will we see her again?
Of course you can,
just open your eyes a little wider
next time you walk past a lake or a flower garden
and you will probably see Carly the Monarch Butterfly flutter by!
(I wanted to blog about Carly the caterpillar/butterfly....doing it from Kira's perspective just seemed to be way more interesting than a straight up narrative ....please take a peak at the photo's of Carly)
