A Canadian Treasure

On our vacation to Cape Breton we got to spend a week in the Highlands. Cape Breton National Park is mountains, sea, forest and waterfalls all in one. Definately a Canadian jewel. One day we were feeling rather adventurous so we took the kids on a 2 mile hike through the woods to the waterfalls of Corney brook. The lure of seeing cascading water and swimming in ice cool pools at the bottom of the falls was great motivation for a six year old and a nine year old.

When we finally got back to the van we toured over the windy mountain roads and came to a lookout over the Atlantic. There the park people had set up a display all about whales. There was lots of stuff there including whale bones, teeth and rope measuring the length of each different species. Beyond the display there was an excited group of people with binoculars and cameras leaning over the railing. All five of us ran over and it was then that we caught a glimpse of the magnificent sea creature, the whale. It came up to the surface and dove under again. For someone whose only encounter with sea creatures was at Marineland, I can say it was an unforgetable experience in the middle the Canadian Jewel, Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
