Fowl Weekend

This weekend ended up being for the birds....literally.

On Saturday we drove down to Phillip Island and visited Seal Rocks and attended the Penguin Parade. Every night at sunset the little fairy penguins gather in groups and march out of the sea and home to their burrows in the dunes. It is a protected area so there are boardwalks and spots for you to sit along the beach. It was really magical for the kids to watch as the sun went down over the surf and darkness fell. All of a sudden all these little heads popped out of the water and congregated on the shore. They kind of waddled back and forth a bit, made sure it was safe then waddled across the sand and up the dunes. After several groups made the trek across the sand we got to go on the boardwalks and watch them find the burrows. The penguins were very noisy as they made their way "home" after a tiring day of fishing in the ocean. We had lots of fun trying to figure out what they were saying to each other, especially when one penguin tried to go in a burrow that was already occupied.

When we spoke to a ranger she said that the night before they had 1300 penguins in the parade. Thats a lotta penguins!

On Sunday we went to church then drove up to the Dandenongs (small mountain range)
with another family. What another beautiful part of Victoria. There were so many cute little towns and gorgeous scenery. We went for a hike in the rainforest, had Devonshire Tea and we got a chance to feed Cockatus and Rosellas. (all the while being laughed at by my favourite Aussie fowl, the Kookabura)

Definitely a weekend for great fun and company and of course, the birds.
