All night he had been riding,

even though he was a seasoned knight

the weight of his armour was beginning to cut into his shoulders.

On his left was his shield,

emblazoned with the crest of the lion.

On his right his sword,

straight and double edged

its sharpness hidden deep within the sheath,

which hung down beside him as he rode in the darkness.

Though he couldn't see them, he knew all around him there was countless others

trained and dressed for the offensive that was about to take place.

United they rode under the kings banner,

silent except for the flapping of the flag in the wind.

Usually his place was on the castle walls confronting intruders

who, deceived by his stature thought him an easy target.

Now he was a warrior who had seen many battles

yet never known defeat.

As the first light of dawn broke over the horizon,

the sound of the trumpet reverberated

through the Maple trees and across the farmers fields.

Looking around him, for the first time he could see

hundreds and hundreds of others just like him

armour clad, helmets down and swords now drawn.

Horses stomping, armour clanking, last minute adjustments

then the anticipated command,

CHARGE!!!!!!!!

We all know how this story will end,

though not without blood, sweat and tears.
